The Jaggery Advertisements

In an era of health-consciousness, misleading marketing ploys are all too common.

One such ploy is a jaggery advertisement claiming to be sugar-free and ideal for calorie-conscious individuals.

But does it hold up to scrutiny?

Understanding Jaggery and Sugar

According to the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), “Gur or Jaggery means the product obtained by boiling or processing juice pressed out of sugarcane or extracted from palmyra palm, date palm, or coconut palm.”

A good quality Jaggery/Gur typically contains over 70% sucrose, less than 10% of glucose and fructose, less than 5% minerals, and under 3% moisture.

In contrast, sugar comprises over 99.7% sucrose and “sugars” means all monosaccharides (glucose, fructose, etc.) and disaccharides (maltose, sucrose, lactose, etc.)

The Sweet Truth : Jaggery Vs Sugar

While the prospect of indulging in sweet treats without guilt is tempting, the reality is that jaggery is a type of sugar made from evaporated cane juice or palm sap. It may be natural, but it still contains sugar and calories.
