When I Was Caught Off Guard
I was a busy executive, taking pride in being workaholic and never really bothered much about regular exercise.
I was not over weight nor I had any major conditions such as diabetes or high blood pressure.
However, I did feel a bit “low on battery” towards the end of a busy work day.
One day as I was sorting through my paper, a sheet flew off and I bent to pick it up… that’s it… and I just could not get up.
I could sense a spasm in my back slowly cramping me up.
It was so severe that I could neither get up on my own nor even hold on to a chair and hoist myself up.
I was in tears and thankfully, as I had company, I could make to my bed.
It was quite shocking as neither I had any prior back ache nor I was lifting any heavy stuff.
A simple bending action led to this and my physician asked if there was any sound of something breaking… Oh no.
Did he suspect any slipped disc or worse still a fracture ?
Did I have any osteoporosis and resultant brittle bones that I had not detected early on ?
It was the most harrowing experience for someone like me who was other wise hale and hearty and aging gracefully onwards to my fifties.
Medical examinations, thankfully revealed no major issues and the usual multivitamins, physical exercises etc were recommended.
The spasm was my body’s protective mechanism for my spine as my back and core musles had turned weak … The next course of action was Physiotherapy sessions which worked wonders.

What I found was that several of the Physiotherapy exercises started off with simple stretches, to activate core muscles and slowly strengthen them over time.
The strong muscles and strong core improves our posture and protects our spine. I found lot of similarities between many of the stretches with Yoga postures.
Hence this blog to share my personal experience.
What causes lower back pain in females?
Understanding Lower Back Pain in Females
Lower back pain is a common problem that affects females, particularly those over the age of 40.
Hormonal changes, decreased bone density, and muscle weakness can contribute to this discomfort.
Additionally, a sedentary lifestyle and poor posture can further exacerbate the issue.
It’s essential to address the root causes of lower back pain to find lasting relief.
Causes of Lower Back Pain
Several factors can contribute to lower back pain in females. Muscle strains, herniated discs, and osteoporosis are some common culprits.
However, for women over 40, the leading cause often stems from a combination of weakened core muscles, decreased flexibility, and imbalanced posture.
By understanding these causes, we can focus on targeted exercises and stretches to alleviate and prevent lower back pain.

How to relieve lower back pain ?
Effective Exercises and Stretches
To relieve lower back pain and prevent its recurrence, a comprehensive approach is necessary.
Strengthening exercises that target the core muscles, such as the abdominals and back muscles, are vital.
Additionally, incorporating stretching exercises into your routine can improve flexibility and alleviate muscle tension.
Let’s explore five yoga poses and stretches that are particularly beneficial for women over 40.
Importance of Stretches
Stretches are often undermined. I realized this when my physiotherapist asked me to perform certain movements which I simply could not as my musles had gone dormant!
So I had to undergo a basic routine to simply activate my core muscles.
That was surely a wake up call and call for stretching. Stretching helps to keep your core muscles strong and flexible.
This can help improve your posture and reduce your risk of Injury.
In addition, stretching can also help to relieve pain and improve your range of motion.
I will write a separate blog on the other common condition faced by women over 40, that is Plantar Fasciitis
Yoga Poses and Stretches to Prevent Lower Back Pain

We will discuss five stretches that I personally found to be extremely beneficial.
These stretches are easy to do and can be done at home.
Just 10 minutes of your “me time” each day can make a big difference in your lower back health; so take charge and get started !

1. Cat and Cow Pose : This gentle flowing movement helps improve spinal flexibility and stretches the lower back muscles. Begin on all fours, as you exhale arch your back upward like a cat, lifting your head and tail bone. Then as you inhale, lower it down, creating a concave curve like a cow tucking your chin to your chest. Repeat this sequence several times.

2. Bridge Pose: This pose helps to strengthen your core muscles and improve your posture. Lie on your back with knees bent and feet flat on the floor. As you exhale, pressing through your feet and arms, lift your hips off the ground, creating a bridge-like shape with your body. Keep your back straight, hold for a few breaths, lower down, and repeat.

3. Cobra Pose: This pose helps to strengthen your back muscles and improve your posture. Lie on your stomach with your legs extended, palms placed beneath your shoulders. Inhale and gently lift your chest off the ground, keeping your lower body relaxed. Hold for a few breaths, exhale, and slowly lower back down.

4. Pavanmuktasana Pose (Wind-Relieving Pose): This pose helps to release tension in your lower back and gas build up in digestive system. Lie on your back and hug your knees to your chest. Rock gently from side to side and to and fro, massaging your lower back and stretching the spine.

5. Child Pose: This pose helps to relax your back and improve your flexibility. Kneel on the floor, touch your big toes together, and sit back on your heels. Exhale and lower your torso over your thighs. Extend your arms in front of you or rest them alongside your body. Bring your forehead to the floor, breathe deeply and relax in this position.
I found this position, alternating with the Cobra position extremely useful to provide immediate relief from muscle stiffness building up. This was my “go to” pose with the slightest inkling of a back ache !
