Pets Are Your Happiness Therapy : 24X7

Dog lover? Thinking of getting a pet?

What was that single most important thing that helped you breeze through the year long work from home and periodic lock down ordeal ? Well, for me, the answer is crystal clear — my two doggies.

I am a relatively new “dog lover” and first brought home Mishka, the silky terrier, over four years ago.

It was a sudden decision out of the blue; Perhaps triggered by the empty nest syndrome, despite me having a hectic work schedule and not having too much free time at home. However, Mishka became the centre of our universe.

When she turned two and mellowed down, I was worried if she required company. While I had almost zeroed in on getting a cat (low maintenance post Mishka’s demanding grooming ritual); Coco, the Chihuahua, suddenly came up as an option.

She was in right place at the right time and came along as an additional family member. This entry was completely unannounced and a total surprise for the rest of the family.

But as a friend puts it philosophically it is a “Dog’s calling and the dog chooses her master”. I used that to my advantage to justify our second pet 🙂

How Does Having Pets Help ?

The last four+ years as a dog parent have been filled with such great joy. Every day after the rigorous grind of office work, to be greeted with the boisterous two, ecstatic just to see us home — you just can not compare this feeling with anything.

I do not recollect having any high stress situations or emotional lows, especially during this period as a dog owner. The pets have had a calming and soothing effect.

I got to know fellow dog owners in the campus which helped me getting to know my building neighbours which at times is a challenge in Mumbai Condominium settings where each one is busy with their own lives.

I was fortunate to be able to take my pet to work at times, typically on Fridays.

It used to be such great fun as Mishka had a special bond with each of my team member and also with Kantaben, the lady who kept our office spic and span

MAGIC.

There has been a lot of talk about how the prolonged isolation brought on by remote working has resulted in mood disorders, anxiety, boredom and burn outs for many.

I, somehow, never felt this as I had my very own happiness therapy right through the entire pandemic period !

Our two cuties, Miskha and Coco, have been our best companions at home.

Not having delegated the pleasant task of daily dog walks to anyone else, it also made sure that at least 15–30 minutes were spent in non-sedentary /outdoor activity.

A lot of things would be different in the coming years through and post pandemic era.

The current work pattern is bound to generate fatigue where there is no “off work” time boundary set.

That would be always a challenge as the office has arrived home. But what one can do is to find ways to cope and make the best of the evolving situation.

Home offices would make it easy for pet lovers to finally get a pet in case they were putting that decision off due to logistical difficulties.

For senior citizens who have had to limit their outdoor activities, what a blessing it would be to have a pet to tend to and receive their unconditional love and reciprocation.

I have seen my friends and relatives who had a “dog phobia”, fall in love with Mishka and overnight turn into dog lovers once they had a chance to interact properly.

Value of “Pet therapy” has not been understood well, especially in India. It is often considered as a “luxury” to have a pet.

Like music therapy to elevate mood, light therapy to counter “Seasonal Affective Disorder”, “pet therapy” needs due recognition — Its 100% chemical free, 100% natural and 100% effective while it is quite addictive !

An epidemiological study of experience during the pandemic of pet owners versus people without pets might provide additional proof point how pets made possible to beat the pandemic blues.
